One year in

As of the 27th of May I will have been in Thailand one year. Seems like yesterday. The year has gone fast. Just got my 3rd job in 10 months (the 1st two months were spent in school). Starting the 1st of June I will be a Professor of English at Valaya Alongkorn Rabjabhat University (named after a Thai Princes of the 30's seems she left some land that was to be used as a university so it got named after her). I will be teaching about 15 hours a week (with possibly more on the weekends for extra Baht). I will probably be living on Campus. They have some nice houses here. Mine, if I take it, has two bedrooms, kitchen full bathroom, central room and AC. Went by to look at the place - didn't have a key to get in.

From the front, the University looks rather small but is narrower than it is long. It is modern with AC in the classrooms and computers availabe to the teachers. Several canteens on the premises but all Thai food. I will be in the central office with one other prof and administrative staff. I have yet to see the library or classrooms. I understand that classes with be anywhere from 9 to 25 students.

They were agreeable to let me give two week notice with Developmental Solutions. I will finish up three of my 5 classes in the next couple of weeks. The Nestle classes will go until July. I like working for these guys. I met May through one of my classes and got my feet wet teaching business English at the adult level. However I figured it out - I was spending 19 hours traveling a week to teach 14 hours of Classes. Now it will be three hours travel to teach 15 hours. A nice tradeoff. I will be expected to be available from 8:30 until 4:30 at the University.

The advantages of working at the University are many. I will get a work permit which means I do not need to make Visa runs. I will get Insurance in 6 months. I will also get paid 2 weeks vacation and 13 public holidays. Plus the university is down for two weeks in October and eleven weeks starting in February (for which I get paid). Stable pay with OT options if I want. A house for 4000 baht a month . Currently I am paying 9000 for a 2 room where I'm at. More at a later date.

During the first two weeks of June you should see Thailand in the press because they are celebrating the King's ascendancy to the throne 60 years ago. He is currently the world's longest reigning monarch. He is well respected and liked by the people. They have a tribute to the King before every movie at the theatre and everyone stands up. The crown Prince is not well liked over here (sort of like Prince Charles). Enjoys the ladies a bit too much (is a married man).

Well looks like my trip home won't be until February or March with the new job and all. Oh if I last the year I get a months salary as a bonus and a 1000 baht raise.

With the new house I am hoping it will be an enticement for May to move in with me. She can have her relatives stay over in the extra bedroom and it's actually a little closer to work for her.
